Situated less than half a mile from the centre of Harrogate, the lovely spa town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, P&C Music has a huge selection of recorded music to browse through. In the Rock, Pop and Indie section there’s rare recordings on vinyl and CD; jazz fans nearly always find something they didn’t know existed and in the classical section there are unfamiliar works by famous composers and hard-to-find discs by your favourite performers. The stock is refreshed daily, and we have boxes for you to browse through in addition to what’s on the shelves. In addition to the new releases, our second-hand section is particularly enticing with many deletions and imports.

The proprietor, Peter Robinson, started selling records when he was a teenager to get funds to build his own collection. That was in 1966, so he has a huge amount of knowledge about recorded music should you wish to ask him anything! Whilst you’re browsing, have a complimentary cup of coffee and listen to some music. Peter’s knowledge of music ranges from pop, rock and blues through to classical and jazz. For classical music enthusiasts, we have the latest issues of The Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine (plus back issues) and the latest Penguin and Gramophone guides to help you choose what you want. If you are a jazz fan, we have several reference books which list the key recordings by each performer, with reviews. For everything, just ask Peter!

Pomp and Circumstance was founded in 1994 by ex-Mayor of Harrogate Geoffrey Webber as a classical and jazz record shop. It was an independent family business with a tradition of excellent customer service.  In May 2010, Peter Robinson became the new proprietor. Quondam artist, drummer (in a blues/rock band) and librarian, Peter took on the challenge of taking over the business with his wife Lise and daughter Laura. Why? Because it was a dream fulfilled, a chance to channel his lifelong passion for music into something practical. He hoped that his enthusiasm would help each customer find something they liked, whether it was an old favourite or an exciting discovery. After several years running the shop, this seems to be the case.

But we need to go back to 2012. This was when Peter decided to change the name of the shop to P&C Music because people walking past saw the words ‘classical’ and ‘jazz’ on the awning and didn’t bother coming in because they thought that was all we sold. He broadened the offering to include pretty much every genre of music (chart is the one thing we don’t do).  Now, lots more people visit the shop and are impressed by the wide range of music on offer. I’m pretty sure we haven’t lost any of our regular customers but have certainly gained many new ones!
